Dental braces in Bloomingdale describe a variety of appliances used to straighten patient’s teeth. They can include the traditional metal braces, which are the oldest type and are still quite popular. Metal braces, while still the most noticeable type, are smaller and less visible than the “railroad tracks” of previous generations.

What Are Clear Braces?

Clear braces are ceramic or porcelain braces. They have the same components as metal braces, but the brackets are made of a ceramic that is the same color as the patient’s teeth. The most visible part is the archwire running across the teeth. Clear braces are as effective as the traditional metal braces, but they can get stained.

What Are Lingual Braces?

Lingual braces are a variation of metal braces in which the brackets are placed on the backs of the teeth and are thus facing the tongue. The braces are thus practically invisible. Lingual braces are also a safer option for people who play contact sports than are other types. Similarly, they do not interfere with a musician’s ability to play a wind instrument. On the other hand, they take longer to adjust and clean than do other types of braces.

What Is Invisalign?

Invisalign is a set of clear plastic aligners that fit snugly over the patient’s teeth. Like braces, they work by gradually shifting the teeth into their proper positions. Unlike braces, the aligners are removable, so the patient has an easier time cleaning their teeth. The patient will also be able to eat or drink what they like without worrying about whether they will stain or damage their orthodontics.

The patient will typically wear the aligners for at least 22 hours a day. They will change sets every two weeks.
