Vacuum technology is used in a wide variety of different applications. It is used in brake systems in vehicles as well as in dental offices and in a variety of other equipment and industries.

The vacuum system itself contains several components, but one of the most important to consider is the vacuum canister. It is a storage system to maintain a consistent vacuum or to boost the vacuum capacity in small, compact types of equipment and systems. The canister itself does not create the vacuum, but if it I incorrectly sized or if it is of poor quality or design, it can easily impact the amount of vacuum throughout the system.

Seals

One of the most critical components on the vacuum canister is the seal. This seal ensures the vacuum is maintained and the correct amount of vacuum is provided or the given application.

Most of the best designs, particularly for the canisters used to create the suction needed in dental equipment and devices, are the Buna-N Seals or O-rings. These are extremely durable and long lasting and provide a complete seal all around the lid, ensuring the vacuum is maintained consistently throughout the system.

Ports Available

For use in a dental office, the vacuum canister can be a large or small size based on the specifics of the equipment. In most applications, having two HVE or high volume evacuators and one SE or saliva ejector port provides the suction necessary when working with patients in any type of procedure.

Different configurations of the ports may be required in different models and options in equipment. When replacing the canister, it is crucial to note where and how the ports are located and configured to make replacement of the old canister a simple process.
