Dental implants are a tooth replacement option for missing or badly infected teeth. They offer comfort, stability, and restoration as close as possible to the natural tooth. Implants have been used for decades to help patients of all ages to replace teeth. Unlike dentures, dental implants don’t have to be removed overnight and no adhesives are required.

Treatment Steps

There are usually three steps for dental implants and the treatment may take several months.

The first step involves the dentist surgically placing an implant in the jaw.  A screw is then inserted to the implant to prevent the possibility of gum or debris entering. The implant has to remain covered for about three to six months while it fuses to the bone.

After the months have passed, the second step begins where the dentist uncovers the implant and attaches a post. The gum tissue is then left to heal around the post. Sometimes the post is attached during the initial surgical procedure. However, most times this is done at the separate surgical procedure.

The last step is where the dentist creates a crown, which is similar in size and shape to your natural tooth. Then this is attached to the implant.

Oral Care Tips

After your dental implants are successful, it is important to take a few measures to ensure they last:

  • First off, it is important to maintain good oral hygiene by brushing twice a day and flossing once a day. Interdental brushes can be used to clean those hard to reach areas around your implants.
  • Another tip is to quit smoking. Smoking tends to weaken the bone structure and can eventually lead to implant failure.
  • Ensure that you make regular visits to your dentists for cleaning and general checkups.
  • Don’t chew hard foods, such as hard candy, as they may break or weaken the crowns.
