When most people think of dermatologists, they seem to think of acne and problems with your skin as a teenager. While this may be the reason many teenagers go see a Dermatologist, it is not the number one reason why seeing one can be beneficial to your health.
As more and more people are becoming aware of all the dangers of prolonged sun exposure, many people are starting to seek out dermatologists to help them look for problems with their skin. I personally have been to a dermatologist for many years. I used to go for acne problems but as I have begun to age I now go for a complete mole exam once a year.
Many people do not realize just how dangerous it is not to see a dermatologist on a regular basis to have your skin completely looked over. Many people tend to leave moles and places that look odd on their skin alone and never have anyone look at them. For this reason many family doctors are now becoming more aware of potential skin problems and are sending more and more of their patients to dermatologists to get it checked out.
Once you make an appointment to have a dermatologist look at your skin from the top of your head to the tips of your toes you will only have to go once per year to do routine check-ups. Therefore it will not take a lot of time out of your day to go see a dermatologist and make sure everything checks out fine. If in fact the dermatologist finds a problem or a potential problem with one of your moles, he or she will recommend that it be removed for biopsy. It is not a very painful thing to have a mole scooped out of your skin. Basically the dermatologist will numb the area with a local anesthetic and once you cannot feel anything it will then be scooped out similar to a tiny melon ball would be used. Your doctor will call you within a few days for the lab results. Barring anything being strange you will not have to go back for a year. If however, in fact there is some abnormal tissue the doctor will call you back in and have to re-cut the same area going deeper this time. This procedure will take longer to heal and will need stitches as well.
It is better to be safe than sorry when it comes to the health of your skin. Many times the skin is looked over without concern, but if you have any place that looks odd to you, go see a dermatologist today.
