In general, when customizing an AR15, one of the first options to consider is changing out the stock handguard and rails and moving to a different look in the AR15 rails.
Depending on the type of rails selected it is possible to create a more streamlined look or a beefier type of look that is entirely based on the preferences of the gun owner. There is a range of different models of rails on the market today including those that are very easy to install and that allow attachment of a variety of different components to the weapon.
Construction
The construction of the AR15 rails is an essential factor to consider. Choosing a steel construction design with a finish that is going to stand up to use is important. As there will be components attached to the rail, durability and secure attachment to the weapon are both important things to think about when making a choice.
There are different options in rails including short action, long action and step down rails. They are designed for specific types of weapons and will fit correctly with the gun they are designed for, making it easy to buy the right rail.
Railed Handguards
One option to consider when customizing your weapon is to choose the railed drop-in handguards. This type of designs often has a quad rail, which means there are four rails in the design that are the full length of the component.
The most common type of rail on these designs is the Picatinny, which makes it a good option to mount many different types of accessories including lasers and even flashlights. They can also be used with foregrips, but because they do move with firing they are not recommended for mounting optics.
Free Floating Rails
The use of free floating AR15 rails creates a very tactical look to a gun. Again, these are often found in the quad rail design, but they are also designed with just a solitary rail across the top of the barrel. Typically, these are used with a low profile gas block to create a streamlined, efficient look to the gun. With the design of these rails it is possible to mount any accessories on the rail, including optics.
The free floating rails are not drop-in styles and required more advanced skills to be able to install. However, once installed these are ideal rails for serious hunters and shooters, providing the look and the functionality you are looking for.
