Don’t spend more than you have to. Remember these penny-wise tips before you rent a car in Costa Rica.

Always return the car on time

You’ve heard the horror stories before: get it to the rental company a minute late and pay for the consequences. Don’t want to have to shell out extra? Make sure you get the car back to the rental company right on time or maybe even ahead of schedule.

Ask for a grace period

Things don’t always go the way you expect them to. Even with the best intentions, you could still end up getting to the rental company late. So ask about a possible grace period for returning the car in advance. Some rental companies offer about 30 minutes to an hour before they begin charging you for late fees. That should give you a little more leeway.

Take a look-see

Don’t just get behind the wheel and drive off. Check the car for any damage. Spot a scratch or dent? Make sure get in touch with the rental company to let them know none of that was your fault. So they can’t charge you for any pre-existing damage. If the damage affects the car’s performance, negotiate for a different make or model instead.

Know your policy

Before you rent a car in Costa Rica and say yes to the insurance coverage offered by the rental company, check out your own policy first, says the Investopedia. If you’re covered, then you can save yourself the pain of paying extra for damage insurance.

Do your research

Nothing like going around and getting tips from people you know. Go online and scout around for better rates and offers. This is an excellent way to make sure you never have to pay for high rates that could turn your holiday into a rental nightmare.
