What Is a Porcelain Veneer?

A porcelain veneer is a very thin, laminate shell made to look like a natural tooth. They are placed on the front of the tooth to cover up any blemishes or breaks. Not only does this improve the appearance of the tooth, but it also protects against further damage or discoloration.

Who Qualifies for a Porcelain Veneer?

There are many different reasons why a patient may be interested in a porcelain veneer. Overall, this is a good procedure for resolving issues such as:

*     Tooth discoloration
    Worn down teeth
*     Irregularly shaped teeth
*     Gapped teeth
*     Broken or chipped teeth
    Misaligned or uneven teeth

You can speak with your dentist about what procedure is right for you. Thankfully, porcelain veneers are an extremely easy and painless procedure to invest in.

How Does the Procedure Work?

You don’t have to worry about pain, or even about multiple visits – veneers can be put on quite easily! After you and your dentist decide that veneers are the best solution for the problems you are having, you may have impressions made of your teeth. Afterward, the dentist will remove a little bit of enamel from the surface of the tooth that is going to receive the veneer.

After the impressions are made and the veneers are manufactured, they will be bonded to your tooth using a heat-activated bonding material. The veneer is tooth-colored, and will be adjusted to fit the natural look of your mouth. The bonding process uses a cement hardens very quickly, and soon the veneer will feel like a natural part of your front tooth.

What Should Be Expected Afterward?

For the next couple of weeks, you might want to focus on any changes you notice in your bite. You can also avoid chewing hard substances, allowing the veneer some time to set. You will likely visit your dentist for a follow-up to ensure that all is going well.
